| Q.2: When was electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) first used, by whom was it used and for what purpose? | ||||||
| A: The concept of electrical muscle stimulation has been in existence for well over 200 years. Galvani observed first in 1780, the twitching of the muscles of a frog’s leg under the influence of electricity; Volta proved twenty years later that this was due to the sudden “make” of the current flow in an electric cell. The induction or faradic coil was discovered by Faraday in 1831; Duchenne in 1855 described its application for electric stimulation of muscles. Remak first demonstrated the motor points for accurate electrical testing of muscles. Du Bois Reymond in 1849 formulated the law of electrical muscle stimulation and first employed the induction coil for muscle stimulation. He also made the first make and break key for interrupting an electric current. Bergonie of Bordeaux constructed the first device for general electric muscle stimulation by faradism; Kellogg, of Battle Creek, described the first sinusoidal muscle stimulating apparatus. The later methods of electrodiagnosis by condenser discharges and chronaxia testing also led to the employment of these forms of low frequency devices for muscle stimulation. | ||||||
| Under the term of currents of low frequency a variety of currents are included. Their common physical characteristics are that their voltage or tension is constantly changing and is quite high. As a rule, these currents are composed of relatively wide, high energy electrical pulses flowing at frequencies of from 50 to 100 Hz between the electrodes applied to the body. These are the so called Faradic-type currents, produced by all conventional EMS devices. The effect of the current is to cause tetanic contraction of muscle. | ||||||
| The therapeutic importance of low-frequency currents is twofold: (1) They furnish a characteristic procedure known as electrodiagnosis for the recognition of pathological conditions of the motor tract; (2) they furnish means for the stimulation of weak or paralysed muscles, a form of electrical muscle excitation valuable in the treatment of injuries and diseases. | ||||||
| Q.3: To what does the term, low-frequency currents apply and how many varieties are there? | ||||||
| A: For the purpose of this explanation the term, low-frequency currents apply to those therapeutic currents having pulse repetition rates of from 50 to 100 cycles per second. | ||||||
| The two varieties, most frequently met with in a Physiotherapy practice are the Sinusoidal current and the Faradic current. Both these currents have a frequency of at least fifty cycles per second and will cause a tetanic contraction of voluntary muscle, so for this purpose, the two currents are interchangeable and therefore referred to as Faradic-type current. | ||||||
| Faradic current (faradism) is produced from an interrupted direct current (DC), derived either from batteries or rectified mains current. Sinusoidal current is obtained from the AC street current by suitable modification through a step-down transformer. | ||||||
| Finally there is the Galvanic current which can be drawn directly from dry cell batteries. It's physical effect is Chemical and referred to as: electrophoresis. It's therapeutic uses include: relief of inflammatory changes and the introduction of certain drugs through the skin by means of the current. The procedure is known as: iontophoresis. The interrupted Galvanic current will produce a tetanic contraction of voluntary muscle. | ||||||
| Q.4: Who first introduced the concept of EMS as an aid to slimming? | ||||||
| A: Up to the end of 1947 all therapeutic, low frequency muscle stimulators were single channel, two electrode devices. | ||||||
| Then, in January 1948, Dr Sebastian Hawkins obtained a Patent for the first multi-channel, 32 electrode EMS device. This marked the start of the Professional electro-pad slimming concept. The life-span of that Hawkins Patent came to an end in 1968 and a number of companies then copied and sold the concept under various names. | ||||||
| Q.5: Does that mean that all those other muscle stimulating machines on the market today are the same as the Hawkins machine? | ||||||
| A: No, not at all. There is a vast difference between the latest Hawkins units and those other machines. Since 1967, the Hawkins slimming device has been upgraded on several occasions. Patents were obtained for each upgrade. | ||||||
| All Hawkins digital machines generate the new, patent protected, biomedical Quantum Currents composed of polarity alternating low energy neuro-stimulators, designed exclusively for the treatment of Obesity in the application of improved electrokinetic neuromuscular stimulation, in contrast to conventional electrical muscle stimulators, or EMS machines. | ||||||
| A wide variety of conventional muscle stimulators (EMS machines) are commercially available. All of these generate the traditional Faradic-type current. All have similar fixed parameters and vary, from manufacturer to manufacturer, only in pulse forms and reliability. Orthodox medical guidelines for the treatment of obesity exclude the use of Faradic-type muscle stimulators on the grounds that the current is NOT suitable for use as an aid to slimming. | ||||||
| Q.6: What is Faradic-type current and what is it used for? | ||||||
| A: Faradic-type current is used therapeutically for the stimulation of weak or paralysed muscles, the treatment of injuries and as a diagnostic means. This current is produced from an interrupted DC, derived either from batteries or rectified mains current. | ||||||
| Faradic-type current is composed of relatively wide high energy electrical pulses, traditionally having durations (pulse widths) of 1 millisecond (1,000 microseconds) and occurring at frequencies of 50 to 100 Hz (Hertz). i.e. 50 to 100 pulses per second. The current is applied through electrode pads strapped to the body and connected to the EMS device by insulated wire leads. | ||||||
| At high intensities the current will stimulate muscle tissue, as opposed to nerve stimulation. However, although the current is localised to individual muscles, only those tissues which lie in the area immediately underneath the electrodes will show response. Thus, when Faradic-type current is applied to healthy tissue, there will occur a tetanic muscle contraction in the area underneath the electrodes. | ||||||
| Some of the unpleasant side effects associated with Faradic-type currents include: Burning, swelling, itching and redness of the skin immediately underneath the electrode pads. Faradic-type muscle stimulators are NOT suitable for use as an aid to slimming. | ||||||
| Q.7: What is Quantum current? | ||||||
| A: Quantum current is a unique, digitally created biomedical current, designed specifically for the treatment of obesity by electromedically induced voluntary muscular exercise. This current form is generated exclusively by the Hawkins medical devices. i.e. Digital CompuSlim 75 PRO and Digital EBA-16 PRO. | ||||||
| The current is composed of miniature Polarity Alternating Low Energy electrokinetic nerve stimulating pulses (PALE-pulses). A determinate quantity of such PALE-pulses will form a single Quantum current pulse-phase (QC-phase). | ||||||
| For example, a quantity of 20 PALE-pulse, each having a duration of 20 microseconds separated by intervals of 30 microseconds will create one single QC-phase with a duration of 1 millisecond. A series of such QC-phases separated by 9 millisecond intervals will provide a Quantum current frequency of 100Hz. i.e. 100 QC-phases per second. Thus, the QC-phases are the units of the Quantum current they form. | ||||||
| The Hawkins medical devices are selectively operable to generate Quantum currents of varying compositions and frequencies, in accordance with the particular slimming procedure which has been selected. | ||||||
| Q.8: What is a microsecond and a millisecond? | ||||||
| A: Both are fractional portions of one second. Therefore, one-million microseconds make one second but only one thousand milliseconds form one second. | ||||||
| Q.9: How does Quantum current work? | ||||||
| A: Quantum current functions as a neuro-stimulant. In other words; it stimulates efferent nerve tissue to trigger spontaneous chemical responses which produce naturally induced physiological nerve impulses with sufficient rapidity to incite groups of muscle into action. Thus, the energy for muscle contraction (exercise) is not derived directly from the stimulus of the Quantum current but from the naturally induced, physiological nerve impulses, thereby resulting in natural voluntary muscular action. Thus, providing a form of voluntary physical exercise, without fatigue, strain or discomfort for the patient and without any unpleasant side effects whatsoever. | ||||||
| Q.10: How would you compare Quantum current to Faradic-type current? | ||||||
| A: You can do that quite easily yourself by reading through the Answers to Questions 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 & 9. Then make your own comparison. Of course, it all depends on what you want to use the current for. | ||||||
| If you need an electro diagnostic device that can also be used for the treatment of injuries and/or other pathological disorders, your choice might be a Faradic-type device. | ||||||
| On the other hand, if you run a body-toning and/or slimming business, a Faradic-type device would not be of much use to you. Obviously, you would choose something that can help your clients to become slim. | ||||||
| Q.11: Why does Quantum current work better for slimming than other currents? | ||||||
| A: Because it is the only biomedical current that can induce effortless, voluntary physical exercise without strain or fatigue. And, it is a well known fact that physical exercise is the best way to firm and slim the body. | ||||||

| Q.32: Approximately how long will it take me to lose 50 pounds with the Hawkins System and machine? | ||||||
| A: The medical report to the Australian Medical Association concerning the Hawkins System and machine can be used as a guide in answering this question. (The report is published on this website). | ||||||
| For the evaluation study, 40 female patients were selected to attend Hawkins Clinic treatment. 50% of the group were children ranging in age from 13 to 17, all of whom required to lose less than 20 lbs. The remaining 50% of the group consisted of adults ranging in age from 25 to 62. This group required to lose more than 20 lbs but less than 55 lbs. Individual weight losses achieved by the adult group were far more significant than those achieved by the children in the group. | ||||||
| At the conclusion of the 12 weeks trial period, final weight measurements of the 40 patients were made. Their individual weight losses ranged from 5 lbs to 48 lbs with a mean loss weight of 17.6 lbs. Thus indicating a weight loss range of between 4 lbs and 1.47 lbs per week. (48 ÷ 12 = 4 lbs and 17.6 ÷ 12 = 1.47 lbs). | ||||||
| So, to answer your question: "How long will it take you to lose 50 pounds?" We would say that, by serious application of the Hawkins system and treatment programme, it will take approximately 3 months for you to lose 50 pounds. | ||||||
